Snorkelling in Cold Winds 2

Prologue

Last time we left me and my chums, we were in the adventure park having fun, and also discussing how I looked in the parka which was once James’s, but was now mine.

Story

JAM: So Gary, how ya finding the parka? James asked after about 15 minutes of sliding about on the slides and climbing and jumping and things

GAZ: great…extremely warm…I may even take it off for a bit, seeing as I am so warm..

JAM: AHA! See I told ya you would be OK in it! Now you got that £10 seeing as you’ve worn it for a while and are still overjoyed with it!

GAZ: yep, there you go, ten qwid. I then handed James two five pound notes.

JAM: Thanks.. Listen, I’ve gotta run, Shawn want’s to come back to mine with me for a while and help each other with our homework. You gonna be OK?

GAZ: yeah sure, even if it snows, I’ll be fine. I certainly won’t freeze in this coat.

JAM: fit then shawn?

SHA: yup, just comin’ catch ya later gaz, maybe in P.E. tomorrow. Listen, just ignore your concience. If ya feel cold, then wear that coat! understand? I nodded

JAM: right, I’ll catch ya in school tomorra then yeah?

GAZ: ok buddy, sure will…listen, if it’s quite warm I may wear my ski jacket…but if its cold, then I’ll damn sure be in this, that’s for sure..

JAM: ok. no problem, wear it whenever you like, but remember, if you ARE likely to feel cold, then dress WARMLY!

GAZ: ok, laters mate. And thanks for the coat!

JAZ: that’s no problem..

With that, James and shawn left, leaving just me and Aaron on the adventure park, but it was soon Aaron’s time to depart as well.

AR: Listen gaz, I’ve gotta run, I shall see ya bout..ok?

GAZ: yeah sure, go-ahead..ya couldn’t help me down first could you? AR: sure Aaron then helped me down from the high climbing frame

AR: I wouldn’t use these on your own.

GAZ: nah, im not…anyway, im off back home now for m’e clubs.

AR: gonna hit some golf shots are we? In that thing?

GAZ: not totally…I’ll probably take it off if it impeeds my swing!

So they both left the adventure playground. Aaron turned off left after about 200 yards, and left me to make the remainder of my way home on my own. However, I knew where to go, as I had done the journey loads of times. Just then however, there was a huge gust of wind which made me shiver quite voilently.

GAZ: Man it's getting very cold out here again..i'd better put my hood up and zip it up real tight, to keep warm!

So I managed to zip up his parka pulling on the massive hood. I then finished off zipping up the hood, all the way to the top, which once again pulled the warm snorkel of fur, right into my face, making me feel slightly warmer immedeintly. I then tightened the drawstrings in a shoe-lace style knot in order to be that little bit warmer. Still the wind was increasing, and some of the larger gusts were now reach 15-20mph.

GAZ: What was that i wonder? I said as I though I felt a raindrop hit my hood. There it was again....and again......drop,drop, dropdropdropdrop and then whoosh! it was raining, no, it was pouring down with rain..then there was a massive clap of thunder!

GAZ: Great! now what am i going to do? well, at least it's not bin-day tomorrow! i could maybee sneak it into the bin cupboard! yeah, and i'll tell mom that james lent me a jacket for the journey down...then i could put it in my camp tomorrow So I kept himself hooded, and went home. I went down his alleyway, hoping nobody would see me dressed like it...there wasn't a soul in sight..I reached my door and pressed the doorbell wondering what mum might say! Just then, the door opened, and there stood my mum, giggling to herself...

MOM: What ARE you wearing that for?

GAZ: well, i forgot my jacket, and james lent me this...don't worry, he has another one..

MOM: well, i was wondering...i saw you didn't have a jacket, and when i heard the thunder, i half expected you to turn up drenched! but it's only that massive coat that's wet...best ya leave it under the porch.

GAZ: yeah..i'll get it back to him during school tomorrow...

MOM: no need is there? i thought i heard you bought it from him.... Oh no! mum has found out that james has sold his parka to him. What will be my reaction and will mum let me keep it?

GAZ: OK, so yeah i bought it from him. I wasn’t going to tell you about it and I was gonna hide it in my camp, as you don’t like me in these!

MOM: well, I’ve changed my mind! Besides, you needed something with a hood for the wet weather…now ya have it…forget you’re ski jacket…dad, told me about how you said you was freezing the other day. Then I got this letter through the door just now, returning your tenner…james’s mom had apparently agreed with him to give you the coat for free, when james mentioned it…he’s been grounded for taking the money in the exchange!

WOW so now mum has changed her mind and accepted me wearing hoods! This has got to be the best news I have received in ages. The next night, I was watching the weather forcast and they were forcasting a temperature of just SIX DEGREES!

TELEVISION: so folks, looks like you’d better wrap up warm, because tomorrow looks like being one of the coldest days so far this winter season 91/92!

DAD: well gaz, looks like you’ll definitely need your BIG COAT on tomorrow. Looks like being very cold indeed!

GAZ: ya. Looks pretty darn chilly to me!

DAD: You’ll wonna make sure you have your hood up, in order to keep very cold weather at bay!

GAZ: Yeah, sure thing..i shall definitely do that.. With that I went to bed, looking forward to finding out just HOW warm my parka actually was! Then, finally, the faithfull morning was here! I looked outside my windows to see the tree’s blowing around quite hard, and I listened carefully….yes, I could just about hear the wind which was blowing quite hard now…

DAD: Just listen to that wind. Boy I bet It’s going to be very cold outside today..Are you sure you don’t want a lift to school Gary?

GAZ: Nah, I’ll be OK, besides I’ve now got a coat which was made to keep you warm (very warm) in such cold, windy weather!

DAD: OK, don’t say I didn’t ask!

So I finally got dressed, and got my things ready. Breakfast was soon finished and it was time for me to leave for school…I planned to leave about 10-15 minutes earlier, so I could walk around the playground in my warm parka. Minutes later, I left the main part of the house and stood under the porch for a moment, listening to the bitter winds. I then felt the fur hood with my hand, before I gloved it, and pulled on my hood. I then zipped it right up and fastened the drawstrings as tight as I could, without losing too much vision, so I could navigate the dodgy road’s which I needed to cross..

Today, I would use the crossing lady, as I felt it was far too cold to remove my hood, unless inside.. then decided to undo my drawstrings, but leave them on, but only fastened very slightly..Finally I opened the door..It was often a struggle to open it when it was windy and today was no exception. Finally I managed to get the door open, and I stepped outside, shoved my bag onto my sholder, checked I had my keys, and closed the door, and began my journey to school..

As I ascended the alleyway I thought to myself “man there isn’t much wind, or need for my hood!” so I unfastened my drawstrings and unzipped my hood, leaving it on my shoulders but slightly covering my ear’s to keep them from getting too cold. Then as I reached the top of my lane, I noticed that there was an opening opposite. The wind was howling down that alleyway, and as it merged with the slight breeze from my lane, there was a massive gust of the most freezing cold wind you could imagine. My initial reaction to this was “oooohhhhh, man that’s freezing” and so I once again pulled on my parka hood, zipping it right up, but not fastening the drawstrings. It was then I found out how superb parka’s are at keeping out frigid weather.

I also found out that the hood was sometimes prone to being blown into the other side of it, so I decided then top fasten the drawstrings (lightly) everytime I wished to use the hood during windy weather, and this prevented the sides clashing. Man you could imagine what it was like, all wrapped up like somebody out on their antarctic trip, although my legs were burning from the intense cold, but apart from my legs and feet, I was really amazingly warm. I stared down the long snorkel glancing at the sparse amount of people outside this morning and noticed that they all looked absolutely frozen! I must be the warmest person out here.

Then I saw a little 5 year-old child, walking mitten in mitten with his mother, and yes, he was wearing a parka too, although he didn’t have the zip up as far as me, he still looked superb in his new flashey navy parka “perhaps they do sell them for younger kids these days” I thought to myself. Just then I got to the crossing and crossed the road, and I caught up with the young kid and his mom.

GAZ: Hey, perhaps you’re child might be warmer if he zips his hood up all the way, like I’ve got mine!

WOM: Yes, but he won’t be able to see that well.

GAZ: No, of course not, but he will be much warmer though

WOM: darling, is your face cold?

BOY: yeeeeaahhh

WOM: show me how to adjust it please!

GAZ: Sure you do it like this I then showed the woman, using my parka, just how simple it was to create the snorkel

MUM: here, let the man dress you warmer

BOY: ok So I then got down, and zipped up the little boy’s snorkel. Man he looked so snug inside the furry tunnel, which wasn’t quite as long as mine but still long..

BOY: Thank-you

GAZ: Your welcome

WOM: Well, at least he will be warmer now. Thanx..I’ll dress him like that in the new Style you showed us whenever it’s cold again. He looks really quite warm!

GAZ: Yup I’m very warm too. Listen I must dash..i wonna get to school soon. See ya later. So with that I left them and carried on down the road. Just then there was a mighty gust of wind, which really made my legs burn, and the hood even went right into the other side, but was still protecting me from the cold “Bet that kid is glad I did his hood up for him now!” I thought to myself.
